Nore Academy

Isle of Sheppey

Apteriors recently completed the full FF&E design and procurement for Nore Academy, a new-build SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school located on the Isle of Sheppey.

Delivered in collaboration with Reds10 UK Limited built using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the project demanded a deep understanding of how the built environment impacts neurodiverse pupils and those with heightened emotional and behavioural needs.

NORE ACADEMY

Designing for SEMH pupils requires a fundamental shift in approach – moving beyond aesthetics to consider how spaces affect wellbeing, behaviour, and learning outcomes.

Some of the core challenges included:

Creating Calm, Predictable Environments: SEMH pupils often experience heightened anxiety or difficulty self-regulating. Our FF&E layouts were designed to reduce visual clutter, with clear spatial zoning and soft, muted finishes that support calmness and routine.

Durability & Safety: Robust, tamper-proof furniture was critical. We specified anti-ligature fixtures, secure storage, and impact-resistant finishes, ensuring longevity and reducing maintenance needs.

Sensory Considerations: We prioritised furniture and material selections that reduced noise, avoided harsh lighting, and introduced subtle tactile elements. Where possible, we included soft seating zones to create safe breakout spaces.

Flexibility for Behaviour Management: Classrooms and therapy areas required flexible, agile layouts to accommodate both group teaching and individual intervention. Mobile and stackable furniture played a key role.

Staff & Student Wellbeing: Dedicated, thoughtfully furnished spaces for staff respite and student regulation zones were essential in supporting the broader school ecosystem.

Working closely with Reds10, who delivered the school via the DFE’s MMC framework, Apteriors aligned our FF&E design to meet tight programme constraints and factory-led installation requirements.

Key aspects of this collaboration included:

Early Coordination: Engaging with the architectural and construction teams early allowed us to integrate FF&E requirements seamlessly with the modular build, reducing retrofit issues on site.

Digital Integration: We delivered a fully coordinated FF&E package, enabling clash detection and efficient sign-off in line with ISO19650-2 standards and to the DFE’s requirements.

Streamlined Procurement & Delivery: Our experience in fast-track education projects ensured furniture was procured and delivered with 60% of the fixed FF&E installed within the Reds10 Factory, to meet the accelerated MMC timelines, with staged installations aligned to the modular handover phases.
