The Compass School

London Borough of Havering

Apteriors is delighted to have been appointed as the interior FF&E designers for The Compass School (TCS) in Romford, part of the London Borough of Havering. This brand-new institution is dedicated to supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs as well as students with other various special needs. Currently the building accommodates 60 local pupils, meaning that each class group is small and students are supported on a more improved level than in a traditional mainstream setting.

“ We will provide an education where young people can flourish and teach academic subjects in line with the National Curriculum – providing a bespoke, nurturing environment to prepare our learners to lead fulfilling lives.”
Catharine Wensley, Headteacher

Our collaboration with Unity Schools Partnership was marked by their passion and insightful understanding of the unique requirements of an SEMH environment. When designing we had to be very mindful of the environment surrounding the students and how this could impact their emotions and potential to come to any harm, should situations break out within any space. We focused on the psychology of colour, creating consistency for pupils, and establishing stability throughout their educational journey. In addition to standard classrooms, we designed specialised sensory spaces, therapy rooms, soft play and calm rooms, all aimed at enabling both staff and students to achieve the best possible outcomes and future potential in this nurturing educational setting.

During the space planning process, Apteriors ensured a seamless design functionality that aligns with the building and the schools teaching approach. The building was designed by HLM Architects and constructed by modular specialist Reds10 Limited. Our bespoke designs were co-ordinated with HLM’s design intent whilst also tailored to meet the school’s distinct needs.

When designing for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), our primary focus is on creating spaces that are accessible, inclusive, and supportive for all students. For The Compass School, we partnered with Reds10 to implement consistent internal and external colours that are friendly to those with autism and SEMH needs, fostering a warm, comforting, and positive environment for the entire community.

The school is vibrant and inspiring from the inside out. It was essential when designing for students with specific needs such as SEMH, to make sure that the products installed were durable, robust, and had a calming colour palette, to avoid the space looking institutional or clinical. The classrooms were designed to promote concentration, and avoid dysregulation or distraction. We created and supplied sensory rooms so that children could relax in a calming environment and immerse themselves in sound and light therapy. We adhered to the DFE’s standard offerings but stretched the allowance given in order to allow for these special zones to be as fully equipped as possible under the limited constraints of the FF&E budget.

The furniture was cohesive between most classrooms so that the children wouldn’t be agitated when having to transition to new environments around the school. We were mindful of practical spaces and making them accessible to both older and younger students, as well as students with more severe physical disabilities that require DDA access to equipment, such as cooking hobs and sinks. The storage was all concealed and lockable to ensure maximum levels of safety, the blinds installed were anti ligature to avoid any risks of misuse, and the wall mounted storage was installed with floating tops to avoid build-up of rubbish and to keep the space clean.

In addition to our design efforts, we are committed to utilising sustainable products and practices to minimise long-term environmental impact across all our projects.

Our approach includes:

  • Sourcing from British manufacturers
  • Consolidating suppliers to reduce complexity
  • Minimising deliveries by shipping directly to site
  • Selecting recyclable furniture and ensuring that packaging is fully recyclable and kept to a minimum.

Apteriors take pride in being mindful of the environmental implications of our work and in maximising sustainability in all our projects, and this project was no different. The Compass School was built by Reds10 using MMC building methods meaning that 70% of the building was installed before landing on site, including our fixed furniture, reducing our carbon footprint by consolidating supplier/site operatives travel and installation.

Apteriors Services on this project include:

  • Space Planning
  • FF&E Consultancy

Overall we were very proud to have been involved in such an exciting, variable and challenging project and look forward to hearing about these students thriving in their new school!
